Response

This is my response to Olivo Barbieris photos. I haven't done it in the style of his work because I felt that was too hard to achieve as I couldn't get into a helicopter or a high building to take the photos. However, I did manage to climb up two towers in Florence and took some photos from high up looking down on the city. I like the way that there is cityscape and rural landscape combined into one photo. It makes the photo look more interesting. Although these are good quality photos I don't like the shape of the photo. I would prefer it if it was a long panoramic photo because it just cuts off the rest of the landscape which I think looks a bit strange. I think the top photo looks better than the bottom photo because I like the way it's focused o one building and so it has a viewing point and something individual to focus on.

Overall, I think the shoot went well but I think I would have preferred it in a place maybe where the colours were different as I think it looks a bit cheap and tacky. I do like the idea of cityscape so I think I will try and do another shoot looking at cityscape but maybe capture a different type of city.

Olivo Barbieri

Olivo Barbieri has a very unique style of photo. They are all of real landscapes/cityscapes yet they do not look real. He edits them and takes the photos in a way that makes then look like toy buildings and toy scenery. He does this by taking the photos from a height so that everything looks very small and he carefully crops them and blurs out certain parts of the photo to make it look fake. I think this is a very clever way of doing things and it looks incredibly effective. It would be very hard to achieve the same standard of photo that is the same as this as you would need to go in a helicopter or a very tall building to make it work.

I really like Olivo Barbieris work as I think it is very clever and mind boggling as you cannot tell if it is a real landscape or if it is a set that he has made to take the photo. I really like the way he has done it, yet it is not my kind of photo and although I think it's very clever, I'm not too sure about the way that it looks. I prefer photos that look real and that effect the viewer in a serious way.

These are my responses to Maros Krivys work. I have taken my panoramic photos and I have edited them so that they are cut at particular points. These points are not random however, they are cut at points where I think the landscape changes so that people can appreciate every bit of the photo. I contrasted the cityscape and the rural landscape because they are both good photos and so I edited all four photos. I particularly like the second photo because I think the quality of the photos is good and I have cut it at the correct places where the landscape changes so you can appreciate the separate parts of it. I think this shoot was very successful because it means you look at the quality of the photo as well as the presentation.

Maros Krivy

Similar to Olafur Eliassons photos, this is about the presentation of the photo as well as the quality of the photo. However this one has quality and good presentation. He has taken a panoramic shot of a landscape and he has cut it up into four pieces and then places them back together but with a gap in between each cut of the photo. This makes it look like there are four different sections that make up one photo however you can obviously tell it is the same photo all the way throughout. It is almost as if he is splitting up the different pieces of the landscape so when it changes to a different scenery, he cuts it and breaks it up from the rest of the photo so you focus of one bit of the photo at a time so you can really take it in and appreciate it.

I really like Maros Krivys photos because his technique is really good but this hasn't taken away from the quality of the photo as the presentation enhances the quality by making you look at it more in depth. I also like the fact that it is a panoramic photo as this makes it look a lot better.

This is my response to Olafur Eliassons photo. I tried to respond to what I wrote as well by using fewer photos in the grid like presentation. This means that you can appreciate the individual photos a lot more than in his photo. I have also used cityscape as well as rural landscape to give a contrast within the overall photo. I like this because it meant that I could show off more of my photos and show the variety of pictures that I have taken. However I don't like the way it is presented as I think it looks slightly tacky. I don't think that this particular way of presenting the photos has worked in my favour and so I don't think I will be using this technique for presenting again.

Olafur Eliasson

Olafur Eliasson has used lots of different panoramic shots of landscape and presented them in a grid like way. This particular piece of work is more focused on the presentation than the quality of the photos, although these are still very good. I do like the way he has presented them however it takes away your attention from the actual photos that are there. This is because the photos are so small that you can't focus properly on a few of the best photos. There is a pattern in this particular piece of work because he has only taken panoramic landscape photos of fields and not of any urban areas. This makes the photo as a whole very calm and peaceful.

Overall, I do like his work as it shows a lot of what he can do and it shows a variety of his photos. However, I don't like the way you don't appreciate the actual individual photos as much as you would if it was just a few of his photos put together.

This work is in the style of Esteban Pastorino Diaz with the panoramic element to it. I did a range of rural landscape and cityscape to make them contrast and so that you could see the beauty of both cityscape and rural landscape. I love the panoramic view of these photos because you can get a sense of scale and how vast the landscape actually is. It is especially good when there is a particularly pretty landscape that is taken in panoramic mode. You can also see that it works with both cityscape and natural, rural landscape.I like all of the photos that i have taken and edited because i love the shape of the photo and the fact that there is so much to fit into the photo that it just looks endless and so the beauty can go on forever. I particularly like the second photo because of the patterns of the grape vines and the fact that you can see down through them to the rest of the vast landscape behind them. I also like the first one because it is such a beautiful city and you can see every individual building and then the city leads into the rural landscape at the back with the mountains and hills which gives it a contrasting view and makes it more interesting. I think this shoot was very successful and I will defiantly be using the panoramic setting more in this project as I just love the shape of the photos and the fact that the photo seems to go on forever.

Esteban Pastorino Diaz

 

Esteban Pastorino Diaz is a Spanish photographer who did a series of photographs that were done in panoramic. He did this picture above of the forest. The panoramic setting makes the forest look like it goes on forever and that there is no end to it. It makes you feel engulfed into the scene of the photo.  I like the way that there are tree trunks scattered around the place and that you can't see the tops of the trees so you feel trapped inside this beautiful forest. I really think the shape of the photograph effects the viewing experience of a photo. When it is long and thin it shows the expanse of the place. I also really like the way he sets up his exhibitions on this series. He puts a long thin strip of all the photos together on the wall and lines them with LED lights so that you can see them well. It looks really effective and makes the photos stand out. I think panoramic landscapes is a really good topic to do and I think I can respond to Esteban Pastorino Diaz' photos quite well with panoramic views of vast landscapes.

These photos are in response to Chrystel Lebas' work. I went to a wooded area just as the sun was going down and it was beginning to get dark. I took a few photos without the tripod but they were blurry as the camera had to be on a longer exposure for the lighting that was there. So I put the camera on the tripod and I took lots of photos with this. I also tried taking the photos with the flash on. At the time I thought that it didn't work because I could only see the photo on the camera screen and so I thought it was really dark. However, when I got back home and put them on the laptop, I saw that it worked really well but I has only taken one photo like this. The top photo is the one that I took with the flash on. I think it looks really good because It's almost like there is a spotlight on the trees. I like the way there is just one part of the photo which is light and the surrounding area is dark. I don't like the bottom photo as much because its just too dark and I couldn't edit it to look mystical and dark at the same time.

If I was to do this shoot again I would defiantly take more of the photos with the flash on as it looked very effective. I would also try and make the photos more like Chrystel Lebas' by maybe bringing along a smoke machine to make the ground smoky and make the photo look more mystical.

Chrystel Lebas

 

Chrystel Lebas is a French photographer who lives and works in London. One of her series of photo shoots was based in forest locations where she made her work look mysterious and dark. I particularly like this photo of hers. I like the way it is a long thin photo instead of a square photo because it means you can see more of the forest and it makes it look like a bigger but more isolated place. I also like the way there is the tiniest bit of light coming through the trees on the left hand side. It makes the picture look more mysterious and it also means the tree trunks are more clear as there is just the silhouette of them.

 

 

This photo of Chrystel Lebas' is of a similar nature to the one above. I also like this one because of the colours used and the fact that it is, again, mysterious. I like the way that in both of these pictures there seems to be mist floating around the roots of the tree trunks. This is what gives the photos the mystical look.

 

Overall i really like Chrystel Lebas' work because of the wide shape of them which lets you see more but also becasue of the way they are set up and made to look dark and almost scary. I could respond to this photographer by going into the forsest at dusk and taking the same kind of photo maybe on the panoramic setting on the camera and then i would edit the photos to make them look even more mysterious.

Landscapes

I have decided to move on from the topic of water and weather to look at landscapes. I think this theme is a good one for me because I love taking photos of landscapes and you can explore so much within this topic. I have brainstormed some ideas of topics within the theme of landscapes and i will be exploring them futher and taking photos to respond to different photographers within this field of photography.
