Amy Harrity

Amy Harrity's photos are very good and unusual. She uses people in an empty space to create a good photo. She has definitely used the sunlight to her advantage and used that to light the scene and the person/people standing in her photographs. This gives the photos a natural look to them although I do think that she has lit the photos artificially as well just to give it that extra boost of light.

I really like Amy Harrity's work because I like the way she has used bright sunlight and it makes the people and the photo as a whole look happy and peaceful. I particularly like the bottom two photos because the people are doing things with there arms and hands and it just makes the photo look more interesting. Also, I like the angle of the bottom one because it shows a different perspective and it shows nothing but the sky.

The top photo would be extremely hard to achieve unless I climbed a mountain on the right day with the correct conditions. I do really like that photo because you can only see the people who are in a vast space and you cannot see the view, you can only see mist and clouds.

This is my response to Astrid Kruse Jensen's work. She uses light in her photographs to capture the main event in the photo. This gives it a more powerful look and makes the main focus of the photo stand out. She used different colours on the lit up part to make it really stand out. For example, she used a red coat on the person she was photographing. 

For my photo shoot I got my model to stand with her hands in her pockets looking at the floor on a long road and also in a forest. I did it at night so it had the darkness to it and i put the flash on my camera. I also dressed my model in a red coat and some old boots. This made the red coat stand out with the light on it. There was slight problem with just using the flash and not lighting the scene properly which was that the further she stood away from the me the flash didn't go off and photo couldn't be taken. This meant she had to stand quite close and i couldn't get any really long shots. I really like this photo shoot because you can't really tell where she is. You can only really see her and a bit of her surroundings which gives it that mysterious look.

Astrid Kruse Jensen

Astrid Kruse Jensen is a Danish photographer who specialises in artistic night photography making the scenes look mysterious. She plays with the artificial lighting and the natural darkness to create a chilling atmosphere. I like the way the lighting is used to make the audience focus on the important part of the photo and nothing else. I particularly like the top photo because of the way the light shines down the walkway to the woman at the end looking into what I think is the sea. You can tell that there is water there because you can see the moon and its reflection at the bottom. Its a very simple photo with not much in it. this makes you focus even more on the important part which is the woman and the walkway that she's on.

Astrid Kruse Jensen isn't my favourite photographer as I don't think her photos are my sort of style, however, I think her photos are very well done even though they are not my personal favourite. The photos give out a certain message and feeling to the audience which is what photos are for. I wont be responding to her work because I don't feel like I would like the outcome of it and I think it would be best to stick with what I am already doing.

This photo shoot is in response to Kalle Kataila's work. She used the land and the sky very carefully and separated the photo into 1/3rd land and 2/3rd sky. This meant that the focus wasn't just on the land but you could focus on how long the sky goes on for. The main focus of her photos however is the person on the land in the middle of the photo. This captures the person in a vast space. 

In my response i chose a vast place and tried to make it different by adding two people to the landscape. I took the pictures and put them on the laptop and when i looked at them i thought they were good but there were a few things wrong. Firstly, I don't think the two people work as I think it gives the photo less meaning. If i had done it with one person the picture would have depicted loneliness and that sense of being alone in the world. The other problem was what they are wearing. I think the photo could have been more interesting if they had worn something a little more interesting. And finally the main problem is the lighting. The day i shot this shoot on was very gloomy and there just weren't the right light conditions to do a photo shoot like this in. It makes the pictures look slightly dull and they just don't look right.

Kalle Kataila

Kalle Kataila lives and works in Helsinki. He focuses on exploring the concepts of landscape and how personal narratives attribute to our understandings of these spaces. In these two photos, about 2 thirds of the photo are filled with the sky and the bottom is the land. This gives us a sense of the vastness of the world and the landscape surrounding us. The figure that you can see in the middle of the photos are put in a very specific place. They are a certain distance from the camera so that the person look small and almost insignificant. The figure within the landscape lets you have a sense of the scale of the landscape. For example, in the top picture, without the person in it you wouldn't be able to tell how vast the picture was.

I really like these photos because of how much of the picture the sky takes up but also because of the figure in the middle. It gives you a sense of being lost and shows the scale of the landscape. I also like the colouring of the photos as they are not bright and vibrant but they are dull photos which reflects the mood that you get when you see these photos.

These are the photos that I have edited in response to Ellen Kooi's work. The photo shoot was done in the summer which makes the lighting look really effective. I like the way the sun makes the straw on the ground look golden and really bright. This contrasts with the dark colours that are on the clothing that I am wearing in the picture. This shows that the world is a happy and peaceful place until you look further and deeper into peoples lives. The dark clothing represents depression or unhappiness. The photos are all very peaceful with only one person in the image which makes you feel like you can relate to that one person as everyone has been unhappy in their lives.

 

I particularly like this last photo because on the shape of it and the fact that the person is so far away that she looks lost. I edited it to it was long and thin because it gives you the impression that this landscape goes on forever and that the girl is lost within this place. I like how peaceful and quiet it looks and I also like the colours and how they contrast with each other.

 

I like all the photos for different reasons. The top one I like because you can see the expression on my face so you can tell that she is meant to be depressed or upset. I like the second one because it is different and the arms line up with the landscape and it looks like she is part of the scenery. I like the third one as well because of the shape that she is in. She is curled up on the floor which makes her look like she is lonely and alone in the world.

 

This is one of my favourite shoots that I have done so far because I think having the person in the picture makes it have more of a meaning to it. I will defiantly be expanding on this topic of figure in landscape as I think I can go a lot further with it and it is more interesting that just landscapes on their own.  

 

Ellen Kooi

Ellen Kooi is a Dutch photographer who lives and works in the Netherlands. She uses the landscape and people to create dramatic and poetic stories within the photos. I particularly like these two photos of hers because they are so simple. The idea of a girl sitting on a chair in the middle of a field sounds so boring but somehow, she pulls it off and the photos look interesting. It is also different and looks unusual. The bottom photo i like because it is also very simple yet effective. I like the murky look to it that makes the picture look bitter and cold.

I like the use of colours in these photos as well because if it was any brighter it would look strange and wouldn't give the same effect, and if it was any darker you wouldn't be able to see the photos as well. They have a very good rustic look to them which I really like. Out of these two photos i prefer the top one because it is just that little bit more unique and different.
